The Tempest

For one of my classes, I needed to critique a ballet performance. I have always wanted to see a Ballet West performance, and figured that now I had a good excuse. Who else would I want to go with but my lovely sister!

Although we got a little, okay a lot, confused on who was who and what exactly was happening (we thought the slave and court jester were weird sea creatures instead of actual people), we had a great time! It was based on William Shakespeare's "The Tempest", which should have been our first clue that we should do some preliminary research. It never occurred to me, however, how difficult it would be to pick up on things when there is no dialogue and all you're seeing is an artist's interpretation of the story.

Some of my favorite parts were:
Hearing the live orchestra playing. Sometimes I forgot the the music was live.
Being in the Capitol Theater. It is so beautiful and makes me feel like I have gone back in time!
The opening scenes where they portrayed the ship being caught in the turbulent ocean were great. I love what they can do with just a big piece of fabric!
The dancing was beautiful and most of the costumes were really well done.

Thanks, Jenn, for a fun evening :)

That sounds fun, Emily! Especially with a sister :) I saw the Tempest (the play) at the U of U a long time ago and I think I was pretty confused even WITH the dialogue (and no prep work). Tell Nick good luck on his exam (or whatever it is)!
