Taste of Fall

One day while grocery shopping, Nick decided to buy one of a variety of apples so that we could do an apple tasting.
We have always been Fuji apple people, but what if there was a better tasting apple out there?
Here's the line-up of the apples.
From left to right:
Home-grown by a friend at the Temple, Honey Crisp, Fuji, Macintosh, Cortland, Gala

Once they were all cut and laid out on plates, we realized we should have invited some friends over to help us - that was a lot of apple for two people!
And the winner is: Honey Crisp!
Best. Apple. Ever.

And the loser is: Any apple with a mushy texture (Macintosh, Gala, Cortland).
We like 'em crisp.

Totally agree! However, they are usually twice as much as the Fuji, and we eat a lot of apples, so we usually chose otherwise.

I knew it'd Honey Crisp! Aren't they amazing?! Too bad they're not always available. And they are definitely more expensive.

Love HoneyCrisps... did you know they're a "designer" apple? My only wish with them is that they were a little more tart. We also like Pink Ladys (but only Oct - March or April... after that the texture goes bad since they've been stored for over 6 months), Jazz apples (a new one to me since moving east) and Braeburn's are a good go-to apple year round. Galas have been great straight from the orchard here, but not so great in the grocery store. I'll have to try fujis again...

I've just been buying whatever is cheapest, and I don't think Honey Crisp has ever been on that list. There was a new one at the store the other day that the checker pointed out to me (not very helpful, considering I was on my way OUT, not in), but I can't remember what it was called....started with a T. She said it was the perfect mix of tart vs. sweet and a good texture. I need to swing by today to grab something for dinner, so maybe I'll get a few and try them out.

I've heard that honey crisp apples are delicious but pricey. Thanks for doing all the work of eating and buying the apples. :)
