Finished Project #9

Grandpa's Backyard

I ought to have done most of this earlier in the spring, but I kept putting it off. I spent two days weeding, chopping and raking. I am quite pleased with the results so far.

I took the before pictures way before I actually did it, hence the dead plants vs. blooming plants.

The planters now weeded and with bark.

The "yellow bush" (the totally dead looking thing on the left) had about 1 foot of nastiness underneath it. I think I'll eventually put down some weed guard and bark around its base to cover all the dirt. It needs a serious pruning, but that'll have to wait until the fall.

The rose bushes. They haven't been cut down for years, so in the fall, I'll chop them down correctly. Too lat this year, so all I could do is try cutting out all the dead stuff. There are still some thicker trunks I need to get, but I need a small saw or ax for those. Anyone have one I could borrow?
They don't look like much now, but I'll post when they're blooming. Very pretty!

Finally, I put down the black weed guard fabric and some bark to pretty-up the garden area. Hopefully that will keep the weeds down. I'm not going to plant in that soil, because I don't want to cut holes in the fabric and allow for future week growth. I think I'll set planters on it and do a garden that way. Pictures to come if I actually make it to that point.

Next yard project - tackling these WAY overgrown grape vines/weed vines. Ugh.

Wow Em!!! You and Nick are so awesome to help keep Grandpa's place looking great. Don't know what he and all of us would do without you. The yard looks great so far!
