Friday's Activities
Nick and I started out going our seperate ways in the morning. He went to see the patent office (funny picture follows) while I finished up some last-minute souvenir shopping. Then we spent some time walking around to look at the monuments/memorials at the National Mall. We walked over to Old Georgetown and had dinner at a yummy Chicago-style restaurant then bought some chocolates and headed home.

U.S. PATENT & TRADEMARK OFFICE

Nick found an invention by BYU that had been recently patented.

OUR FAVORITE!
The current exhibition was on the history of shoe inventions. They had items dating back from the 1700s. What types of shoes people wore, inventions patented to make shoes, etc. They also had Shaquille O'Niel's autographed shoe on display. Nick took his shoe off and set it on the display case and took this picture:
Apparently the main difference between a size 17 and a size 23 is the height and width, because the length was almost exactly the same!

That Korean War memorial is a little eerie. What was the BYU invention? So, what day are you leaving?

I agree with Jenn, the Korean War memorial was a little eerie. The shoe display was my favorite. We are anxiously awaiting your arrival home. Be careful traveling. Love you!

I think I liked the shoe one too. I couldn't tell what the BYU invention was either. Well, have a safe and fun drive home and we will see you both soon.

The world's longest blog comment:

I never thought of the Korean War memorial being eerie when we were there, but I can see how it would look a little strange. The most eerie things I saw that day didn't get pictures because Nick had the camera, but I was walking through the sculpture garden and turned the corner to be confronted by the biggest statue of a spider I have ever seen. Talk about scary. It reminded me of a daddy long-legs version of the spider in Harry Potter (only bigger). Around the next bend was about 20-30 statues of people without heads. Now that was eerie!!

The BYU invention was some type of carbon fiber and resin structure that is stronger than steel and much lighter weight. It can be used for utility poles, supports, struts and other such things. For more information you can go to this website: www.isotruss.com/
I think some of the pictures on the website are funny. "so light, even a woman can carry it!" You might see it used in towers around Spanish Fork.

We are leaving tomorrow (Monday) morning--although you wouldn't know it by the looks of our apartment. We have been in denial about packing.
A short description of our trip: We will go through Gettysburgh, PA and on to stay in Dublin, OH. On Tuesday we will be stopping in St. Louis, MO and staying in Nauvoo for two nights! Horray! From there it is off to Lincoln, NE, then Aurora, CO, and finally Saturday night in Price. We will get to Provo on Sunday night then fly to Alaska that very next day. What's pretty amazing, though, is that we are making our second cross-country trip without having to stay in a motel--and we're only staying with one person that we stayed with on the way out here. Lucky for us!

Jenn--give me a call any time next week to set up some plans for July 2. I'll have plenty of time to talk then (when I'm not driving) but probably won't be able to talk much the week before we get together.

Love you all!
