Nick and I are the emergency preparedness couple for our ward, so we were in charge of filling slots for the Stake blood drive. Nick had never given blood before, so I challenged him to give it a try.
Here is Nick's history: He gets his blood drawn, he faints. He watches someone else bleed, he faints. He THINKS about giving blood, he faints.
Needless to say, I had hoped we could give blood at the same time so that I could be there by him and try to distract him. Unfortunately, he got in a couple of people before me. When I came out of the questioning "room" I was surprised to see him still in the chair giving blood. I sat and waited for another chair to open up and watched as the nurse took great care of him. One chair became free and was filled by the guy before me and I waited even longer. Finally, they set me up in the chair next to Nick and got me going. I gave my pint, was unhooked, ate my yummy cookies and juice, then read 2 chapters more in my book.
Eventually, the nurses decided that around 40 minutes was long enough and decided that even though he hadn't yet filled the entire bag yet, he could be untethered! He got so nervous before giving blood, that when they checked his blood pressure, it was surprisingly low. I guess that and having to use a smaller vein just caused the blood to go "drip, drip, drip"!
I'm not sure if he'll be excited to give blood again, but at least he didn't pass out this time--I am very proud!
